Where did I eat the best Chinese of my life?

The Golden Monkey is without a doubt the best Chinese food we have ever eaten, anywhere in the world. I know, that’s a very big claim but it was absolutely incredible.

We started with the duck spring rolls which were perfection. Light pastry wrapped around soft duck and vegetables, they were divine. The kids gobbled them up so fast we had to order more.

The sang choy bow was not the typical mince, it was actual meat pieces diced and marinated. I had never seen sang choy bow served this way, and I don’t think I could eat the traditional mince again now.

We also ordered the steamed pork buns, which were hot steaming bundles of sweet pork that was quite plentiful inside.

For mains, we ordered small servings of each dish. This was enough for two adults and two children. We enjoyed crispy pork belly which was super soft fresh pork meat and a crackling crust, salted and seasoned perfectly.

The sweet and sour chicken was generous and yum, and a hit with the kids. We also enjoyed special fried rice and vegetables in garlic sauce. Both sides were plentiful in size and enough for the four of us.

For dessert, we enjoyed the steamed custard buns. None of us had ever tried them before and they were a soft, sweet bun oozing with bright yellow eggy custard. YUM.

The staff at The Golden Monkey gave fabulous service and nothing was a problem. My daughter has a nut allergy and they ensured she could enjoy all of the food, and suggested dishes she would love and not react too. Our main waitress, Melita, was beautiful, warm and extremely knowledgeable with all of the food on the menu.

I’m not a lover of oily Chinese food and lately in Sydney, I’ve found this to be common when eating Asian. The Golden Monkey’s dishes tasted like they had used minimal oil and none of the dishes had the greasy texture Chinese food can often produce.

The Golden Monkey was our absolute favourite place we ate in Ubud, and without a doubt the most enjoyable Chinese food we’ve ever eaten. Make sure you give Melita a hug for me!
